So I'm an Englishman in Zurich, but not for much longer, I have resigned from my job at Siemens and will be heading back to the UK at the end of the month. Switzerland is beautiful but the loneliness of being away from my family and friends is too much. I have always known that I'm a social person, but without the nourishment of the people I love I find that everything seems kind of pointless, yes I can ring, yes I can email and MSN but it's no substitute for real human contact.

The world cup has started and whilst I am not a massive foot ball fan, I do watch every match that it is possible to watch (work permitting), England got off to a shaky start, nothing new there; but we won at least! Next game on Thursday.

I'm a part time student at the London School of Economics reading for an MSc in New Media, Information and Society. LSE has great pride in having students from all over the world. First question I was asked by my fellow students "whe're you from?" answer "London", response "No! whe're you originally from?" So in my small class of 26 people there were many people from all over, a Swede, Matilda and a Trinidadian, Katie (Trinidad and Tobago), both in the same group as England! Interesting times.

So I have completed all my exams at LSE and all I have to do now is write my dissertation, which to be honest I'm finding kind of hard to kick start myself, but it's summer (I really should have made more progress in the winter).

I'm writing my dissertation on media literacies, with particular focus on content creation (a blog is content creation); but I'm going to focus on a social network site http://www.bebo.com/ mainly used by teens, very similar to myspace, but with more possibilities for customization and content creation in general.

The training you get as a social scientist does equip you with a different lense (I hated this term when I first heard it at LSE) to view the world through. Technology tends to be binary, whereas society and how we interact within it is something very fluid, but I would argue not random.
